马可福音4:35-41
"耶稣在船尾上, 枕着枕头睡觉。" 可4:38

　　繁忙的一天结束了, 耶稣建议门徒在当天晚上, 将船渡到湖的另一边去。不久, 祂就睡着了, 由门徒负责摇橹。可是, 这时有人突然发出尖叫声。

　　耶稣在哪里? "耶稣在船尾上"—— 即在船的后方 —— 在这片尖叫声中, 祂仍然"枕着枕头睡觉"。

　　这个触目惊心的故事提醒我们, 当我们在生活中遇到暴风雨时 —— 不论是严峻、艰难或痛苦的时候, 耶稣都与我们同在。当祂斥责风 ——"住了吧! 静了吧! "—— 门徒知道在他们遇到痛苦的挣扎, 甚至恐惧和害怕时, 祂都会眷顾他们。

　　不久, 门徒独自在这湖中的船上, "因风不顺, 摇橹甚苦", 于是耶稣"往他们那里去, 意思要走过他们去。"(马可福音6:48)耶稣再次在他们身处困境时出现。

　　薛尔顿, 泛尔根(Sheldon Vanauken)在他的著作《严酷的爱》(A Severe Mercy)中, 描述自己和太太受路易斯(C.S. Lewis)的影响而信主的经过, 以及太太在人生的黄金时期去世的经历。他在该书的续集《在怜悯下》(Under the Mercy)一书中, 详述太太逝世后, 他所经历的黑暗岁月。两本书都带出一个主题, 就是在人生最困难和艰苦的时刻, 都有上帝的怜悯相伴。

　　大斋节期间, 让我们记念耶稣忍受的巨大苦楚, 使得我们可以在祂的怜悯下, 存着盼望生活。

IN THE MIDST OF STORM


Mark 4:35-41
"Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion." —Mark 4:38

After a busy day, Jesus suggested an evening boat trip across the lake. Soon he was napping while the disciples handled the oars. But then a sudden squall came upon them.

Where was Jesus? "Jesus was in the stern"—that is, in the back of the boat—and in the midst of this squall he was "sleeping on a cushion."

This startling story reminds us that Jesus is present in the stormy times of our lives—the severe, harsh, hard times. And when he rebukes the storm—"Quiet! Be still!"—the disciples know that he cares for them in their times of severe struggle and even fear and terror.

Some time later the disciples were alone in a boat on that same lake, "straining at the oars, because the wind was against them." Jesus "went out to them, walking on the lake" (Mark 6:48). Again he was present in a severe time.

Sheldon Vanauken's book A Severe Mercy relates the conversions of his wife and himself under the influence of C. S. Lewis, and his wife's subsequent death in the prime of her life. His sequel, Under the Mercy, details his dark pilgrimage after her death. Both books convey the theme that in the most difficult and severe times of life there is mercy. In this merciful care, the Lord is with us always.

Lent helps us remember that Jesus endured the most difficult suffering of all so that we might live in hope under his mercy.

Prayer

Jesus, please remind us that even in severe, stormy times you are with us in your mercy. In your name we hope. Amen.
